Sindhudurg Fort – Guardian of the Konkan Coast Sindhudurg Fort, located on a rocky island near Malvan in Maharashtra, is one of the most iconic sea forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Constructed in 1664, the fort was designed to protect the Konkan coastline from foreign naval attacks and to establish Maratha presence along the Arabian Sea. The fort is spread over 48 acres and is fortified with 30-foot-high ramparts, bastions, secret escape routes, and a unique hidden entrance gate, making it a marvel of 17th-century military architecture. Over 4000 skilled workers were involved in its construction, using tons of lime and stone. Inside the fort, you’ll find the only known temple dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj, along with impressions of his handprints and footprints preserved in limestone. The fort also houses small temples, freshwater wells, open courtyards, and gives a panoramic view of the surrounding sea.
